Upstream Arts' History

Upstream Arts was incorporated in 2006 by Matt and Julie Guidry. Caleb Guidry, Matt’s son and Julie’s stepson, was born with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS), which affects his physical and cognitive development.  Matt, a professional theatre artist and educator in the Twin Cities, exposed Caleb to the theatre world at a young age.

Caleb, who is non verbal, began to use the physical movements, body language and facial expressions he learned through the theatre arts to communicate and engage with those around him. As Matt and Julie watched Caleb find alternative forms of expression through the arts, they realized that all people with disabilities should have the same opportunity as Caleb had to nurture their social and communication skills using the arts.  Matt brings a background in theatre and dance, while Julie brings ten years of non-profit management experience to the organization.  Out of their combined spirit and determination, Upstream Arts was born.  Now, after a year of operations, an impressive roster of local artists, including visual artists, musicians, poets, actors, creative writers and dancers lead inclusive arts education workshops around the metro area, in Special Education classrooms and in collaboration with local disability organizations.

"Working with the participants at Upstream Arts has reminded me that life, like art, is not about perfection. Rather, it's about exploration, adaptation and a willingness to respond to life's unpredictable challenges collaboratively, uniquely and creatively."

-Lorissa Gottschalk, participating artist
