3 Upstream Arts ProPay participants in a small group discussion

Participants having a small group discussion in The Art of Instruction, 2016

Are you a Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) educator? Are you looking for professional development opportunities to make your teaching practice even more creative and accessible? For the second consecutive year, Upstream Arts is honored to partner with MPS Special Education to offer The Art of Instruction, a ProPay course that will begin this month and currently is open for registration!

Through a collaborative classroom structure, The Art of Instruction creates an interactive learning environment to explore artful instruction strategies for classroom engagement, management, and learning. Upstream Arts and MPS Special Education will guide participants through nationally-recognized best practices in the field of the Teaching Artist, the tenets of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and the world of Assistive Technology. Because artistic practices inherently offer multiple ways to express ideas, Upstream Arts has found that pairing teaching artist practices with UDL principles and augmentative communication creates a rich community of learners in the classroom and promotes a dynamic, truly accessible learning environment. The Art of Instruction offers an academic, experiential, and practical immersion into the art of engaging students of all abilities, including students with disabilities, and an exploration of infusing arts-based concepts to enhance your classroom and individual student instruction.

This training course is designed for MPS Regular Education and Special Education teachers, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and other educational support staff that work directly with students. The approaches and methodologies that will be explored apply to a wide range of ages and abilities; and they are useful for teaching students in all ECSE, preK-12, and Transition programs.
